The new opportunities provided to performing musicians via live streaming of performances over the internet are wonderful.  But they carry with them obligations to the musicians whose music you are performing...and the legality of infringement that must be taken into account.

If you are performing a cover song...a song that is not legally owned by you...a song that is owned and copyrighted by another artist, then there are issues of ownership, permission, and/or infringement that you should consider.  And...with musical artists unable to make money from their music through arena events, their focus on infringement and royalties are more present and active than normal.
